2023 Jury Chair

For its 30th edition, the Bayeux Calvados-Normandie War Correspondents' Award is preparing to welcome one of the biggest names in photojournalism: the British photographer Don (Donald) McCullin has accepted the invitation and agreed to take on the role of President of the international jury. Famous for his black-and-white photos, McCullin will be using his time in Bayeux to discuss his vision of the profession and the future of the news media with fellow photographers.

Thomas Dworzak is an internationally acclaimed war photographer and a specialist in the Caucasus, who has been documenting the majority of world events since the 1990s. He has been a member of Magnum Photos since 2000 and was their president from 2017 to 2020. His work has been widely published, including by The New YorkerNewsweekU.S. News & World ReportParis MatchThe New York Times MagazineTime…  He won the World Press Photo award in 2001 for a report in Chechnya.

2021 Jury Chair

This year the jury will be chaired by an outstanding figure in photojournalism: the Franco-Iranian Manoocher Deghati has covered more than 40 wars or revolutions and has travelled to more than 100 countries. Since 1978 he has been photographing current affairs, conflicts and social unrest around the world, starting with the Iranian revolution and the war between Iran and Iraq that followed. After being exiled from his native country in 1985 he worked for several major agencies (Black Star, Sipa, Keystone, AFP) and international magazines including Time, Life, Newsweek, Paris Match, GEO and National Geographic Magazine

2020 Jury Chair

The chair 2020’s jury is a writer renowned for his work at The Guardian and The Observer: Ed Vulliamy has been a war reporter in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and many other conflict zones. His work and books have received numerous awards, including the Amnesty International Media prize in recognition of his commitment to human rights. With one foot in Europe and the other across the Atlantic, he has also written many reports on organised crime, both in Italy and on the US-Mexican border.

The president of our jury in 2019 is one of the most seasoned war photographers of our time. Gary Knight’s photos have been published by Newsweek, Time, The Sunday Times, The New York Times, Paris Match, Stern and National Geographic. His work has been exhibited all over the world and is included in the collections of several museums. Gary Knight is also co-founder and a director of the VII Agency.

Christiane Amanpour is one of the best-known journalists in the profession and a winner of many awards. Christiane Amanpour is CNN's chief international correspondent and anchor of the network's award-winning, flagship global affairs program "Amanpour", which also airs on PBS in the United States. She is based in the network's London bureau.

A Cambridge graduate, Carlotta Gall began her career as a journalist in Russia in 1994. She worked for a number of British and American newspapers and covered the first war in Chechnya for the English-language Moscow Times. She then became the New York Times correspondent in Belgrade. In November 2001, her arrival in Kabul coincided with the fall of the Taliban; she stayed in Afghanistan for twelve years in charge of the New York Times office. Based in Tunisia since 2013, Carlotta Gall combines the qualities of a courageous war correspondent with those of a top-flight analyst.

Carte blanche - James Nachtwey
James Nachtwey, twice winner of the Bayeux-Calvados Award for war correspondents in 1996 and 1999, presents around 30 images from his reports from around the world during the past 30 years. Photos that have become legendary and others never published nor exhibited.

2012 Jury Chair

A famous French photographer from the Magnum Photos agency. His work and books have probably had the greatest influence on young generations of photographers since 1980.
Gilles Peress started out in photography in 1970 and since then he has covered events in Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Palestine, Iran, the Balkans, Rwanda, the United States, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. Gilles Peress has been awarded many prizes, his work has been exhibited at the world’s largest museums and he has published a number of noteworthy books. He continues to work on many different projects, always coming at them from a deeply humanist perspective.

2011 Jury Chair

An American journalist and writer with a remarkable history. Born in 1944, Mort Rosenblum is a great reporter and war correspondent. He worked for Associated Press from 1965 to 2004 on nearly all major world conflicts including the Biafran war, Vietnam and the war in Iraq. He ran AP bureaus in the Congo, South-East Asia, Argentina and France. He now works freelance and teaches at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

2010 Jury Chair

Janine di Giovanni is one of Europe's most respected and experienced reporters, with vast experience covering war and conflict. Born in the US, she began reporting by covering the first Palestinian intifada in the late 1980s and went on to report nearly every violent conflict since then. She has campaigned for stories from Africa to be given better coverage, and she has worked in Somalia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Benin, Burkino Faso, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Liberia, as well as Israel, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans, East Timor and Chechnya.

A major figure in the world of war correspondence. For over thirty-five years, Patrick Chauvel has photographed most of the conflicts that have raged in the world. He is one of the last of a generation of reporters who experienced the Six Day War, Vietnam, Cambodia, Ireland, Iran, Lebanon, Panama, Afghanistan, Israel, Chechnya... His images have been on the covers of the most prestigious media in the world. The author of numerous documentaries, he also wrote a book on the life of a war reporter, a bestseller: "Rapporteur de guerre".
