After war round table

The disappeared: ghosts of the post-war period

The fall of Bashar al-Assad last December revealed the extent of the phenomenon of the disappeared in Syria. Victims of political terror or swallowed up by years of war since 2011, there are believed to be more than 130,000 people. With no bodies and no answers, it is impossible for families to mourn. After every war, these ghosts—neither living nor dead—haunt societies in reconstruction. Yet they are still too rarely taken into account by governments.

Muaoya Hamoud, independent Syrian journalist
Rodrigo Restrepo, brother of Marta Gisela Restrepo, missing in Colombia
