Sudan, war on the ashes of revolution

Curator: Eliott Brachet

Four years after the peaceful revolution that led to the fall of dictator Omar Al-Bashir in 2019 and opened a window of hope for the country, Sudan has imploded. Since 15 April 2023, the country has been torn apart and plunged into all-out war. Fighting between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces militia has already left more than 150,000 people dead, displaced a third of Sudan’s 44 million people and plunged the country into the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with nearly half the population on the brink of famine.
Starting in Khartoum, the conflict is spreading to all regions and communities of the country, fuelled by ethnic hate speech, the influx of foreign mercenaries and sophisticated weapons, against a backdrop of geopolitical competition and regional interference. In the pluralistic, democratic ‘New Sudan’ advocated by millions of protesters, the two coup generals – who seized power in 2021, putting an end to the democratic transition – have opted for war, driving the final nail into the coffin of the revolution. As the conflict drags on, society is becoming polarised. Revolutionary and peaceful voices are being silenced by bullets and often forced into exile. Through the eyes of Sudanese and international artists and photographers, this exhibition looks back at the sudden explosion in Sudan and the shift from euphoria to devastation.
