Attacks on international law: how should we respond?

An increase in military aggression, acts and strategies of intimidation, sanctions against international judges, withdrawal from global conventions, and the abandonment of UN bodies: the multilateral order based on common rules between states, established in the aftermath of the Second World War, is now under threat. But contrary to what those who betray it would have us believe, it is far from dead, and the law of the strongest cannot be an alternative. In reality, international law has never been used more extensively: proceedings before the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) are reaching record levels, arrest warrants targeting heads of state guilty of international crimes are becoming increasingly numerous, and trials brought under the principle of universal jurisdiction are proliferating. Whilst international law is certainly under attack from all sides, it has never been more vibrant.
