The Sahel: between the jihadist threat and the juntas’ drift towards authoritarianism, what are the consequences for the population?

The Sahel is sinking ever deeper into violence, against a backdrop of repression of journalists and dissenting voices that is turning the region into a veritable information black hole. Faced with the military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, jihadist and rebel groups are expanding their influence, despite the alliance forged by the military regimes with Russia. Meanwhile, the population continues to suffer the effects of the conflict, compounded by an economic and climate crisis, which are exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
