2025-2026 Commemorative stone

On Thursday 8 October, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) will pay a solemn tribute to journalists killed whilst carrying out their duties. During a ceremony at the Reporters’ Memorial, RSF’s Director-General, Thibaut Bruttin, will unveil a memorial stone engraved in their memory, in the presence of their loved ones.
This year, 56 names have been inscribed on the white marble, including 17 journalists killed since the start of 2026. Once again, the figures are dominated by conflicts and violence against the press: 27 of the journalists honoured were Palestinian or Lebanese, to whom a special tribute will be paid, whilst seven of them were killed in Mexico, one of the world’s deadliest countries for media professionals.
The ceremony will also mark the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Anna Politkovskaya on 7 October 2006, in the presence of her son Ilya Politkovsky, who will be there to honour the memory and legacy of this iconic figure of press freedom.
Among the relatives in attendance will also be Aïda Belloulid, the partner of the French photojournalist Antoni Lallican, who was killed on 3 October 2025 in a Russian drone strike whilst documenting the war in Ukraine, as well as the partner of the Colombian journalist Cristian Hernando Herrera Nariño, who was murdered in his home country on 6 June 2026 in Cúcuta. Both were exemplars of committed on-the-ground journalism: Antoni Lallican had been covering the large-scale Russian invasion since 2022 for numerous French and international media outlets, whilst Cristian Hernando Herrera Nariño had been investigating organised crime, corruption and armed violence for over 20 years in one of Colombia’s most dangerous regions.
