Reporting on the war, twenty years after Anna Politkovskaya’s death

Twenty years ago, on 7 October 2006, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow. A war correspondent and relentless chronicler of Chechen brutality, she embodied the most demanding — and the most dangerous — aspects of field journalism. We will also be marking the fortieth anniversary of Reporters Without Borders, an organisation founded to defend those who, all over the world, risk their lives to keep the public informed.
A common thread runs through it all: war as the theatre of news, and the freedom to cover it as a hard-won right that remains under constant threat. On stage at the Halle ô Grains, Lucas Menget welcomes Anna Politkovskaya’s son and leaders from Reporters Without Borders for a conversation that leaves no stone unturned. How have the risks changed over the past two decades? Has the proliferation of conflicts made the field more accessible or, on the contrary, more restricted? Between surveillance drones, refused press passes, no-go zones and pressure on newsrooms, what remains today of war reporting as practised by Anna Politkovskaya — up close, true to the facts, at all costs?
An evening to reflect on how far we have come, to assess what has changed, and to remind ourselves why this profession remains, in times of war, an absolute necessity.
