UPRISINGS: GLOBAL
A multimedia exhibition about uprisings around the world.

What does an uprising look like today, and how has that changed over time? Global Uprisings explores the forms, strategies and visual cultures of contemporary protest movements, while offering a historical overview of the role that images and visual symbols have played in uprisings. It traces both what today’s movements share with past revolts and what is distinctly new: leaderless structures, digital networks, surveillance, citizen journalism, anonymity, and the speed at which ideas and tactics now travel across borders.
The exhibition looks at how uprisings emerge, spread and represent themselves. From Iran and Myanmar to Ukraine, Hong Kong, Chile, USA, Serbia and beyond, it examines the symbols, gestures, images and methods that recur from one movement to another, while each uprising develops its own language and identity.
Developed by the WARM Foundation, the exhibition brings together photography and visual material from foundation’s archive of past projects, alongside new reporting, essays and contributions from Jon Lee Anderson, Carol Isoux, Rémy Ourdan, Damir Šagolj, Alice Gabriner, Thomas Dworzak, anonymous Burmese photographers, Adam Ferguson and others from WARM’s network.
