Reporter’s Memorial Tenth anniversary
Ten years ago, the Reporter’s Memorial was inaugurated in Bayeux. Upon the unveiling of the 2015 stele, Reporters Without Borders will gather families and loved ones of the journalists killed on the job in the last ten years.
In 2015, 110 journalists have perished because of their profession or in dubious circumstances. Reporters Without Borders assures that of those 110, 67 have been killed for the sole reason of being journalists. In total, 787 journalists have been killed on the job since 2005. To that number, 27 netizens and 7 media associates can be added. This worrisome situation can be explained by the peak of violence against journalists in the last decade. They are now deliberately targeted and all the efforts put toward their safety have failed so far.
« It is imperative to set up a concrete mechanism for the application of the international law for the protection of journalists », declares Christophe Deloire, General Secretary of Reporters Without Borders. « Today, violent non-state actors have targeted journalists while numerous states do not respect their obligations. More than 800 reporters have been killed in the last ten years. Their death must be met with reactions that match the urgency of the situation. A special representative for the protection of journalists with the United Nation Secretary must be immediately appointed. »

Sarajevo lived through the longest siege in modern history. “The Siege” is a film about those who lived through it, about the human experience of the besieged. Through Sarajevo to beyond, it is the story of a surrounded city, of a battle and resistance. It is also the universal story of civilization facing the worst ordeal of its existence, and the struggle for its survival. Sarajevo resisted and survived. “The Siege” describes a vertiginous descent into war.

The film will be followed by a discussion with directors Rémy Ourdan and Patrick Chauvel, Jean-Claude Guillebaud and Stanko Vasic who testified in the documentary.

Nicolas Poincaré will present the Awards Ceremony
Nicolas Poincaré, winner of a prize at the 1996 Bayeux-Calvados Award for his report on the war in Chechnya, will be the next presenter of the Awards Ceremony evening on Saturday 8 October. He will take over from Lucas Menget.
Nicolas Poincaré began his career at Radio France Lyon in 1987. He worked for France Info as a special correspondent from 1988 until 2000, where he covered the major conflicts of the time – the wars in Bosnia, Chechyna, Kosovo and Iraq, and the genocide in Rwanda.
From 2001 to 2006 he served as special correspondent for the current affairs magazine Sept à Huit on TF1, and also worked in the newsroom of France Inter. In August 2006 he joined RTL to present the discussion programme «On refait le monde». In September 2009 Nicolas Poincaré rejoined France Info as presenter of the 7-10am morning programme, and on 28 February 2011 he joined Europe 1 to present the flagship evening programme Europe 1 Soir from Monday to Friday. In September 2014 to took over from Benoit Duquesne as presenter of «Complément d’Enquête» on France 2 in parallel with his programme on Europe 1.

“Disparus” (“The Disappeared”) is an investigation into the hidden side of a war still going on. Far from the bombs and the devastated cities, the film documents a phenomenon which has been wreaking havoc among the Syrian population since 2011. More than a hundred thousand people have disappeared, possibly even more – as many as those who have died in the armed conflict, according to some witnesses. These disappearances show that the Syrian regime has set up a ruthless killing machine whose inner workings are torture, arbitrariness and cruelty. For the first time, families of those who have disappeared, survivors, and also torturers and executioners speak out about this journey into hell. Through different protagonists, political leaders, religious figures and scenes filmed on the ground, this documentary throws light on the challenges and upheavals taking place in a country which seems condemned to perpetual instability.
A debate will follow the documentary, it will be animated by Michel BEURET, with Garance Le Caisne and the film makers, Sophie Nivelle-Cardinale et Etienne Huver.
The screening will be followed by a round-table discussion including Sophie Nivelle-Cardinale and Étienne Huver.

«Can the jihadist Daesh organisation become a true state?»
In 2015 not a week has gone by without the words “Daesh”, “Jihad”, “Islamic State” or “Terrorism” dominating the headlines. These words, which in themselves represent the world of a single network, are now applied well beyond the borders of Syria and Iraq.
Today we are confronting attacks in Tunisia, Kuwait, Egyptian Sinai; splinter groups in Afghanistan and Libya; logistics bases in tourist idylls such as the Maldives; and fighters joining from around the world, including the West. A war of religion and territory? The establishment of terror? A war of communication? Control of energy resources? A geopolitical show of strength? This evening goes beyond the propaganda and the ready-made myths reflected by the media to try to gain a better grasp of Daesh, its origins and its development.
Does the organisation have the means necessary to achieve its ambitions, and could it really become an Islamic State? What would be the effects on the local populations?
What local branches and offshoots does Daesh have around the world?
Barack Obama has declared a war aiming to destroy the jihadist organisation, but does the international community have the means to destroy Daesh without sparking off other terrorist groups?

Times change and the nature of war too.
Between the Vietnam war, covered by photographers who were incorporated into the American army with officer status, and the war in Syria, where photographers are considered to be prime targets, the status of war photographers has diminished dramatically. In the wake of the collapse of the print market, newspapers and magazines no longer commission photo reports from conflict zones, and we have to rely on the faith and audacity of a very small number of war photographers to provide us with precious accounts of events which have become almost invisible.
To better understand these changes in the profession and the nature of war photography, you are invited to meet three photographers from different generations in a debate organised by Alain Frilet of the Paroles de Photographes (Photographers in Words) organisation. We are delighted to welcome Patrick Chauvel, who has been covering international affairs for more than 40 years and whose reputation and talent shine out in every one of his stories; Alvaro Canovas, a photographer for Paris Match who has been covering international conflicts for more than 25 years, and Laurence Geai, a young photographer who has decided to pick up the baton from the older generation and has just spent several weeks in the occupied
2015 Bayeux-Calvados Festival : The complete ceremony
The Bayeux Calvados awards ceremony for war correspondents took place on Saturday, the 10th of October. Ten trophies were awarded, honoring the work of these journalists.
During the ceremony, a tribute had been paid to the victims of the attack of 7th of January in Charlie Hebdo’s headquarters in Paris .
The names of Charb, Wolinski, Cabu, Tignous, Honoré, Bernard Maris, Mustapha Ourrad, Elsa Cayat were added to the list of journalists killed in the field in 2014-2015 on a memorial stone.
According to “Reporters Sans Frontières “, 71 journalists lost their lives exercising their profession.

The fight for Yemen
In September 2014, after 4 days of fighting, Houthi rebels took control of Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. A few days later, Safa Al Ahmad, a BBC journalist, managed to enter Yemen. She is the only journalist to have filmed for a western television station, a considerable feat in a country cut off from the world for several months. The film is an outstanding document, the result of a highly risky journey which begins in Saada, the province of the Houthis in the north of the country. It was from here that the Houthis began their conquest of Yemen, a country divided into tribal zones, some of which are loyal to the arch-enemies of the Houthis – Al Qaeda.

In the Name of the Temple
During the 6-Day War of June 1967, Israeli soldiers occupied the Temple Mount. This was the site of the Temple, the most holy place in Judaism, which had been destroyed by the Romans 2,000 years earlier. For nationalist rabbis, capture of the Mount confirmed their vision: Zionism is the herald of redemption. ‘In the Name of the Temple’ is the first documentary, drawing on exclusive interviews, to examine the emergence of messianic religious Zionism.
In order to seize possession of what they consider to be the Land of Israel, the Zionists sent their followers to colonise the Left Bank and Gaza. After spurning every single peace initiative, they are now preparing to build a new Jewish Temple on the site of the Al Aqsa holy mosques, the third most holy site of Islam.
